Hauzer in the Netherlands and Leybold in Lichtenstein provide equipment and services for deposition of gold coloring using vacuum deposition. The gold is actually zirconium nitride. It is much harder than gold, so it wears extremely well, and also provides very good corrosion resistance. Most of the parts that they coat are faucets and door hardware, but I don't see any reason that they can't coat jewelry as well.
