Need Order Entry Software for Metal Finishing
November 1, 2008
What is the most used software or best software out there for use in the metal finishing shops? We currently use Filemaker here and I'm wondering if there's something better out there. At least that is based on what we do in the metal finishing industry.

Hi, Chris. Filemaker is indeed a wonderful database program. It is multi-user, cross platform, simple to learn (like a piano -- a child can plink out a tune in minutes, but you can keep learning for years), proven over the decades, and extremely robust (I've never lost a piece of data in using it for many years). I presently use it every day for things like invoicing, address files, postcard mailings, technical literature search, etc.
Years ago I wrote an order entry/shipping/invoicing system for a plating shop in Filemaker and they were happy with it for many years, even as they effortlessly changed back and forth between PCs and Macintosh.
But Filemaker is a general purpose relational database, it is not custom written plating shop software. You would need to retain a software company to set up the order entry system in Filemaker unless you have the in-house capability and time. An alternative is custom written plating shop software whether written in Filemaker, Access, SQL, or a lower level language. Perhaps the single most important thing is to pick a company which will be there next year.
