-----How to Prep and Blacken Brass Lettering
September 8, 2008
I am the Entrance Chair to our community and am interested in changing the letters from brass to black. From what I am told they are brass and some of the letters are tarnished and worn. I would like to make them a satin finish black and need all the help on how to do it or where to maybe send them.
Any help is appreciated and very needed.

Hi, Lynn. While you could find a plating or metal finishing shop that specializes in this sort of thing, I think you will find that your local trophy shop is positioned to do this brass blackening expeditiously for you.
The chemical used is selenium dioxide / Gravoxide, but it might be a large jump from knowing the chemical name to acquiring the knowledge and skill to do a good job of it. Best of luck either way.
