Removing silver plate from copper 

.

Sir/Madam:

have a few copper-based silver plated items that are in sad shape. They need to be replated but instead of that, I would like to know if it's possible to remove all silver-plating and keep them as copper items. \

Is it realistic to assume that this can be a 'home-project' or would I need professional help?

Any advice is appreciated.
