Effect on pH of the system with increasing Cu2+ concentration

August 11, 2008

Dear Sir,

I am investigating metal(Copper)removal by adsorption in biofilms. In my research I use CuSo4 as the solute and observe its adsorption onto the bacterial surfaces in the biofilm.

I did flow through a 10 mg/L of CuSO4 solution on top of the biofilms and with time the solution diffused into the biofilm and the Cu2+ ions get absorbed on to the bacterial surfaces. Final concentration of the Cu2+ within the biofilm came as 1000mg/L due to the adsorption.

Could you please tell me whether this adsorption of Cu2+ onto the bacterial surfaces affect the pH of the biofilm system.
