-----Brush plating Black Chrome
July 15, 2008
A client wants some of the chrome pieces on his motorcycle (along the lower half) black chromed. I have the solution but have never done black chrome as of yet. How will it wear on those lower pieces?
Do I need to remove the chrome and use the same process as gold plating?
I am using a portable system with 15 volt power supply and wands.

1. Black chrome is decorative, so is very very thin. I do not think that you can get thick layers.
2. I think that you will have to be exceptionally good to get a uniform black with a brush setup. I was good, and do not think that I would try it in a real cycle without trying it on a scrap part first.
3. Check with your vendor and see what their recommendation is. My guess is that you would not have to strip the chrome to apply black chrome. Check for protective clear paints.
