How to remove dark stains from oak table [Illinois]

I have read all the advise about removing white stains from wood (letter 10275) so am heading to try it on a ring I left on my table. But led me to wonder about a ring I have had on my dining room table for years. I had a small pumpkin on a tablecloth on my oak table. It got soft and left a dark ring onthe table. Have had it covered ever since, but was hoping for a solution.
