Preparation of Shell Silver (Genuine Silver paint)

Hello,
I am Helga Demets, a hobbyist / artist, researching the use of imitation gold paint and silver paint on 18th and 19th c. My problem is that in preparing Silver paint from silver powder (precipitated from silver nitrate on reduction of Copper) it became gray and nonpolished. Although I am only in the initial stages of research, I wonder whether anyone knows of any references on the polish and change of colour of silver for painting purposes. I am also trying to find out whether there were specific kinds of methods for preparing silver paint.
Please let me know what are my options in this matter.
