How to do metallic coatings like aluminium onto non-metallics like plastic? [India]

August 10, 2007

Dear sir,

I am M.Sc Physics student from india and i am working in the field of metalic coatings by thermal evaporation methods but i want to know how we can do a metalic coating or a conductive coating onto non metalic (means non conductive) substrate? So, please suggest the relevant method and broadly. I am waiting for you answer.

Your's faithfully

Hello, Sudjir. I understood your introduction of yourself and I understood your question, but I'm not sure if I understood the relationship between the two well enough that my answer will be helpful -- but we have an FAQ on Metalizing Non-conductors that may be helpful.

I think you may be thinking of vacuum metalization with aluminum, though. This involves coating the substrate with a basecoat, then applying a very thin layer of aluminum by vacuum metallization, then appying a clear organic topcoat to protect it.

I think our supporting advertisers Ionedge or Vergason Technology could offer information and equipment. Good luck.
