Refinishing old medical instruments for display

+++++++

I have several metal medical instruments that belonged to my great-grandfather who practiced from the 1890's until 1920. Some have rust damage. How should I have them repaired/refinished so they would be presentable for display?

When I watch Antiques Road Show, the depth of knowledge of the specialist appraisers always amazes me. I think the first step, and not an easy one, is to figure out what finishes these instruments were supposed to have. Maybe tin or nickel plating?

Your best bet would be to take them to a reputable plater to try and figure out what is on them. I have had experience in restoring old medical and surgical instruments. Contact me and I might be able to help you out.
