We have an FAQ on Black Oxide which is a quick intro to the subject, D.; further detail is in the Metal Finishing Guidebook.

Angier's Firearm Blueing and Browning [link is to info about book on Amazon] is a classic on the subject.

Complete detail, however, is not something you can expect from an internet forum; rather it is something that a gunsmith aspires to learn from long years of hands-on experience :-)

Bluing on gun barrels is given to give it some amount of rust protection while at the same time improving the looks. The process is to oxidize the surface which will take in the color brown or blue-black.I am a licensed gunsmith and blue expensive guns. This work needs careful preparation and cannot be done without training. .
