Refinishing old bathtub feet, faucet and shower curtain ring [Nevada]

August 27, 2006

I just purchased a wonderful old 1919 cast iron bathtub. I am sandblasting and powder coating the tub, but have spent HOURS and a LOT of elbow grease to try and bring the brass luster back to the shower curtain ring, faucet and shower spicket (these are all large pieces). There must be a quicker easier way!

If there is any lacquer on the pieces it must be removed with lacquer thinner [link is to product info at Amazon]. Then vinegar plus salt will attack the tarnish rapidly. Try a small inconspicuous area because this solution will leave the brass looking rather "raw" rather than warm, but I think you will be able to restpre the warm look with a commercial brass polish like Brasso [link is to product info at Amazon].
