Books about Analysis of Electroplating Solutions
Q. I'm looking for good books which explain analytical methods of most plating solutions and anodizing solutions. I have one but it was published back in 50's. And I'm afraid that it is obsolete now.
Can anybody give me a recommendation?

A. Hi Jeff,
Over half of the analysis procedures are the same for volumetric and gravimetric. For those with big bucks, instrumental analysis has come a phenomenal way.
Simple analysis book that is quite good and explains the chemistry for the cookbook procedures is:
"The Chemical Analysis of Electroplating Solutions" by T. Irvine. ⇨
- Navarre, Florida
A. The Metal Finishing Guidebook has a good chapter about analysis of plating solutions.

A. Try to get a copy of "Modern Analysis for Electroplating" by Peter Wolfram Wild. The publisher is Finishing Publications Ltd. You may be able to get a copy thru Amazon.com ⇨

A. Hello Jeff, and any other interested parties: I'm wondering if the handbook you say you already have (the one from the '50s) is written by Langford? If it is, I can assure you that the majority of the analytical techniques given in the book are still very much in use (at least at Raytheon Systems Company) and are quite accurate. If this is not the book you already have, I recommend it highly, but it may be difficult to find. In fact, it was during my internet search for it that I stumbled across this site. I haven't found it yet (as I said, I have only the author's last name) and the original book that I used to refer to is still at Raytheon, while I am not. The book is old, but the only POTENTIAL shortcoming of the book may be that it doesn't include analytical techniques for some of the more sophisticated analytical instruments (i.e., AAS, etc) which may (or may not) be found in a modern analytical laboratory. I call this a POTENTIAL shortcoming, though, because these instruments may not be available to you or others, and in this case (because the book wet techniques almost exclusively) a person may actually benefit from a book of this type.

The book that Harley is referring to is almost surely "Modern Electroplating" ⇨
Books about General Electroplating and Principles
Q. I want one or two good reference books on electroplating which should cover the basic principles of all the plating process as well as some guidelines for trouble shooting. Any ideas?

free pdf is currently available from academia.edu
A. If I could pick only one, it would have to be the Garden State Branch AESF "Electroplating Course Manual", but finding a copy is no easy task. Worldcat.org says the National University of Australia has a copy 🙂
My second choice would be the Metal Finishing Guidebook ⇨
But our list of suggested books offers many alternatives. "The Canning Handbook" has a list of defects vs. likely causes for each type of plating; and Larry Durney's "Trouble in Your Tank" is a whole book devoted to the art & science of troubleshooting plating problems.

Q. Dear Reader,
I am looking for a translation into English, Spanish or German of the following book:
Title: Trattato di Galvanotecnica
Author: Prof. Dott. Eugenio Bertorelle
Editor: Ulrico Hoepli, Milano.
Can anybody give me a tip as to where I can order this book?
Thanks,

A. Dear Mr.A.Gegenbach,
E. Bertorelle's book (last edition 1974) is one of the best handbooks of electroplating in the world. It was my bedside book from 40 years. Unfortunately, there is no translation into other languages. As you speak Spanish (which is not very different from Italian), the best recommendation I can make is to buy a good italian-spanish dictionary and summon up all your courage.

Books about Nickel/Chrome Plating Plants?
Q. Hello!
Sir,
I am in search of books for Nickel/Chrome Plating Plant. I don't find any book in the market or on internet. Kindly tell me from where could I find this book.
Please reply to me soon.

A. Several places to look for the purchase of books for plating are the following web sites: NASF.org (American Electroplaters & Surface Finishers Society), Metal Finishing Magazine (Elsevier Publishing) ⇩, pfonline.com (Products Finishing magazine).
process supplier - Great Neck, New York
Ed. update: Sorry, Metal Finishing magazine no longer exists.
A. Hi, Gaurav. For a free internet source, please see our "Introduction to Chrome Plating" and "Plating Shops for the New Millenium".
We maintain a list of recommended books from various sources. Three of the best books on that list for talking about the plating plant as opposed to only the process chemistry are "The Electroplating Engineering Handbook" ⇨
"The Canning Handbook" ⇨
and "Installation & Maintenance in Electroplating Shops". Good luck.

A. I don't think there is a book specifically on electropolishing in print anymore, but you can hopefully get a used copy of "The Electrolytic and Chemical Polishing of Metals by Tegart ⇨
But quite good coverage of electropolishing is included in the

Books for Decorative Chrome Plating
Q. Dear Sir,
I need a reference for books that explain all about Decorative Chrome Plating.
I have one - "AESF Manual - Basic Practical Electroplating", that's a good book but I still have a problem and I need more information about decorative chrome plating. Please help me to find another book about it and where/how I can buy it.
Thanks

A. Considering the book you already have, the first things I would add are finishing.com's "Understanding Chrome Plating", and the little booklet "Quality Metal Finishing Guide to Decorative Copper-Nickel-Chrome Plating available for about $5 from MFSA at NASF.org
Again, most plating texts include at least a little about decorative nickel-chrome plating, but for specific coverage please consider "Nickel and Chromium Plating" by Dennis & Such ⇨

"The Handbook of Hard Chromium Plating"
Q. I'm searching books and publication about hard chromium plating, I read about a book called "The Handbook of Hard Chromium Plating" by Guffie, but is not available on Amazon or any other book sellers.
Could you help me find out this book or any other book like this?
It helps me also if a used copy!

A. It's sad, but very few of the classic electroplating books are in print anymore, and even the major used book dealers have run out of many of those classics. We link the mention of these books to their stock numbers at Amazon as well as eBay and other places ⇨
so that you can check stock easily and frequently ⇨
Our advice is to frequently check stock at multiple sources through the links we have built for that purpose, and to immediately buy any that you find at a reasonable price :-)

A. I have that book, which I have made high quality, photo-static copies of. I, however, am not certain of what the legal ramifications would be for giving out those copies. Ted might be up on this...?

Thanks, Randy. Although I have no special knowledge of the subject, I believe that giving out or selling photocopies would be a copyright violation.

"Garden State Branch AESF Electroplating Course Manual"
Q. Hello,
I have used these forums off and on throughout my career to assist with exciting plating problems and to gain more insight into certain aspects of plating and finishing.
One of the hard to find books for my library is "Garden State Branch AESF Electroplating Course Manual". Is there a location to get a digital copy or known way to obtain a physical copy?
- Portland, OR
September 10, 2021
A. Hi. It is indeed a great intro to all aspects of plating, but unfortunately it may not be available :-(
It was typed on an electronic typewriter during 1986, shortly before computer word processing became a common office thing so, sadly, there is no digital copy.
The sole publicly available copy I can find thru search engines anymore is in The National University of Australia. For many years Tilton Rack & Basket in Fairfield NJ was selling copies at the cost of printing, but it would surprise me if they were still doing so 35 years later -- but you could certainly try e-mailing [email protected] or phoning 973-226-6010.
Maybe some day books.google.com will cover it, but not yet. My copy is fading so I'm scanning it, but copyright law and all ...

Hi Ted,
Thanks for the info and reply. I reached out to Tilton and will see what happens.
Being a younger generation in this industry- some of the literature is harder to find these days and many of the books have the best tribal knowledge for troubleshooting when things go bad.
Thanks again for the reply and for the forum!
