Ballizing process [Massachusetts]

June 13, 2006

I do a hand ballizing operation with an Arbor press in some bushings. Right now we have to use multiple balls to expand the hole and obtain the desired finish for a .2187 ball to ride smoothly in it. How much clearance should I need to be able to ballize this hole just once. Does it depend on the material and bore finish?

Clearance? Maybe you referr to interference (ball being greater than bushing). It depends on the elastic and plastic (temporary and permanent deformation) properties of the particular part, which in turn, depend on the material, hardness and shape. The issue here is the friction between ball and bushing making it more difficult to obtain the desired results w/o galling, seizing, etc.
