Wear parts for compressed sawdust [South Africa]

June 7, 2006

I have a piston type machine for manufacturing compressed sawdust firleogs. This machine is really very basic and has only four wear parts. Namely a piston head, wear nut, taper and wear sleeve. The finished product firelogs are 75mm diameter.

The taper and wear sleeve need to be frictionless to manufacture a good log and highly abrasive resistant to last. Can somebody please help me to find a suitable abrasive resistant and low friction coating or steel / treatment for these wear parts.

There are certainly alternatives, and some may even be better, but the 'standard' time-proven approach for components like this is hardening the steel and then hard chrome plating it. Good luck.
