Metal is easily the best substrate for plating onto, but just about any substrate can be plated -- although the durability may be a problem, especially if the sculpture is outside. For something unique, you could consider plating onto wax, then melting the wax away for a hollow sculpture (maybe you've seen hollow gold earrings?
