Letter 39049
Browning a sheet of copper to use for a
kitchen island [Ohio]
January 17, 2006
We recently purchased a hammered, copper, brown patina kitchen sink.
We would like to make a kitchen island to somewhat match it. We have
access to a sheet of shiny copper plate. We need whatever we use to
be food safe. We just need a brown tint on everything. Does anyone
know how we can achieve this look?

Brown for copper and its alloys:
50 gm copper sulphate
5 gm potassium permanganate
1 lit water
90 C temp.
You can immerse object in solution or solution can be sprayed ( or
rubbed or brushed) on object. When colour is good rinse well, dry and
wax it.

Try using the search engine on this site - there are a lot of
recipies for patina solutions in the archived letters. One method
that springs to mind (although it might not be practical in your
case) is oiling and baking.
Good luck!
