Surface treatment (bluing) with Gun Blue 1702

2005

Hello

In order to perform a repair on a jet-engine part we need to carry out a surface treatment. The surface treatment has to be carried out with Gun Blue 1702 which meets the requirement of the aviation specification AMS2484 [affil link]. In accordance to the engine maintenance manual it is the only product we can use at least it is the only product listed. Does anyone know if an alternate product exist which also meets spec. AMS2484 [affil link]? It seems that Gun Blue is only available in the U.S and only in a 2 Oz. bottle. I would like to use an alternate which is procurable in a, e.g. 1 quart canister and also available within Europe.
Your help in the above is very appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

Years ago, Swissair was probably the most demanding airline in conformance to specifications and workmanship. They did, however let us work by GE or PWA or RR overhaul specifications on their respective engines and all of those had more than one choice of chemical for virtually every chemical process. Check out the appropriate OEM SPOP and see what they allow as sources.

Hi.
Gun Blue 1702 is available here for international orders, also in pint:

Ed. note, June 2015: that link is broken and while there are still many Hoppe's products, we haven't been able to find Hoppe's bluing for years

I cannot get anyone to certify that any product meets AMS2484 [affil link]. I need to have a certification I/A/W AMS2484 [affil link]B per section 4.5 Reports: " "The Vendor of the blackening solution shall furnish with each shipment a report showing the results of test to determine conformance to the technical requirements. This report shall include the purchase order number, AMS2484 [affil link]B, manufacturer's identification, batch number, and quantity." Can anyone help?

Thank you

Has anyone found a replacement for Hoppes gun blue or a supplier for AMS2484 [affil link] coating? We are having the same issue finding AMS2484 [affil link] (gun blue) that is called out in the technical data/work instructions.
Would appreciate any feedback .

Has anyone found a replacement for Hoppes #9 Gun Blue? Did the manufacturer discontinue this particular product? Please inform me of a replacement product if there is one?

I no longer see any mention of gun blue on the Hoppe's website. Also, a couple of on-line dealers say "discontinued by manufacturer" and the rest say "temporarily unavailable". So I would say that, yes, it has been discontinued. Why Hoppe's would not say so, though, electing to pretend it never existed, I can't reconcile; so it must remain a bit of a mystery :-)

Strangely, it seems to still be available, for unknown duration, in very small bottles as part of a gun bluing maintenance kit on Amazon.

Please contact Hoppes and let us know what they say, Ave. We've already noted that webpages from many distributors say "discontinued" and that the Hoppes website no longer mentions the product. Good luck.
