-----Plating scheme for x4130 sliding tube
I have two x4130 tubes where one slides in and out of the outer tube. There is no real stress on the tubes and about .005 clearance. I am going to paint the outer tube but am not sure what to do with the inner tube. I want the inner tube protected from corrosion, have a metal appearance and not show signs of scratching as it slides in and out of the tube. I will be able to apply a coating of silicone to the tube for lubrication. I was thinking of nickel plate/decorative chrome. Any suggestions?

Hi, John. I believe that nickel-chrome plating will be a good idea, but that you won't get any significant plating on the I.D. of either tube. What you might consider is a phosphate treatment after the chrome plating.
It won't "take" on the nickel-chrome plating, but will bond onto the unplated I.D. Of course, if you continue with the plan to paint the outer tube, you can simply phosphate it all over and then paint the exterior.
