Tensile Stress as related to galvanized coatings

1999

I am working in galvanising iron steel coil factory. I want to know what do tensile stress and yield point actually mean? I am not an engineer, and I am not sure what if the tensile stress is too high, would it affect the end product for example if we send for roll forming?

Is it always true that tensile for cold roll coil is always higher than galvanised iron coil? Lately, we detected that tensile for galvanised coil is higher than cold roll coil. The other case is tensile stress for cold roll is 891N/mm^2, but after galvanised the tensile drop to 531N/mm^2, is this normal?

Anyone has any suggestion? I would like to have a better understanding on this tensile, anyone can help me?

Hi, Ming. When one metal is coated onto another by galvanizing or electroplating, or another method, it is usual that the coating is stressed. the coating is often in tension. If you then do a forming operation on the coated object that further stretches it, the stress can exceed the yield point of the coating and it will crack or spall off and lose its protective value.
