Antique Brass Bowl in Furniture Sink

Q. My house cleaner just scrubbed my beautiful antique brass sink bowl to a shiny brass finish. I'm in panic mode and just devastated on what to do to repair or fix this back to match the antique fixtures.

Any ideas?

A. Yes: take a deep breath. Brass tarnishes, and it cannot stay shiny for long. You can speed the darkening by smashing up a hard boiled egg, and leaving it in the sink overnight with Saran wrap over the sink to contain the vapors. If not enough, try liver of sulfur [on eBay or Amazon] if your other fixtures are brownish; but go slow as it's powerful stuff. If your other fixtures are a more complicated artificial color, though, it could be hard to match them. Take a look at our FAQ about patinas. Good luck.
