-----Inadequate bonding of silver powdercoat
We are in the ad specialty business specializing in writing instruments. Powder coating is not my area of expertise. I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with a new pen we would like to put into our line. It is a pen with a silver powder coated finish. When we applied a silkscreen imprint, the adhesion was not acceptable. I placed a piece of scotch tape over the imprint and when I pulled it off, the imprint and the top of the silver powder coating pulled off as well. A silver coat was left on the barrel, but the top pulled off, preventing any chance of proper imprint adhesion. My question is, what can be the reason for improper bonding of the powder coating and is there anything I can do with a product that performs like this? Thank You!

Dear Jeff.
One of the first things I would be asking your powdercoat supplier is whether two coats have been applied. Perhaps the second coat is laminating from the first.
Secondly I would asking for a cure test of the powdercoat to ensure the powder has been accurately cured.
Thirdly perhaps a less glossy finish would suit your requirements better. The lower the gloss the better the adhesion.
