Letter 34031 Synthesis of thin films of magnesium di boride by electroless plating [Michigan]+++++ Hello, I am an MS student of the Material science and Engineering. I also have 1 and half year experience in through hole plating mechanism of the electroless plating used for the PCB industry. My research is based on plating the thin films of magnesium di boride on copper wires for suitable superconducting use in electronic device applications. i would like u to help me out in this regard. We first plan to heat the salts MgB2.6H2O and boric acid along with Dimethyl sulphoxide soln. since boron reduces only at very high temperatures I believe we have to do this at only very high temperatures. We are planning to use sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent. with sodium succinate as complexing agent and exaltant. also sodium acetate as a buffer. Please let me know if it is posssible to carry out electroless plating in this particluar fashion and also if we can do this at this elevated temperatures. Thank You Yours truly, [name removed at request]
+++++ You just have to look at the electrochemical potential of Magnesium to see that you will never have success in trying to plate it out of a aquaeous solution. Marcus Hahn
+++++ I am doing the particulate depositon of Boron by using the
electrophoretic deposition technique to deposit the boron films and
then intercalating the Mg by vacuum evaporation as well as by the
Electrochemical reduction of Mg ions by making use of
potentiostat. Hyam Rajeskumar shankar
