Vulcanello Island steam vents ruin boat's anchor chain

++++

I am a fulltime sailboat liveaboard currently cruising in the Med. I recently anchored off the Island of Vulcanello where there are sulphorous steam vents on the sea floor. My anchor chain (new this season) seems to have lost some of the galvanizing on the portion that was in the water and is showing signs of rust.

Will sulphuric acid remove zinc from a chain? Can only a portion of chain be re-galvanized without having to cut it?
