A. Although it's out of print, "Preparation of Metals for Painting" by Samuel Spring [affil link on Amazon] is a book I've read that I can recommend as what you're looking for.

Other books that sound right, but which I personally haven't read are Rausch's "Phosphating of Metals" [on Amazon or AbeBooks] and Freeman's "Phosphating & Metal Pretreatment" [on Amazon or AbeBooks].
