-----nitride coating of aluminum
Is it possible to protect aluminum alloys with a nitride coating? If so is it a conversion coating of AlN which does not change the part dimensions or is it a deposition of an AlN layer? If it exists, is nitride coating on aluminum commercially available in high volume and is it competitive in cost to anodizing?

By your question, I believe that you have confused nitriding of aluminum with coating processes that are used on cutting tools, typically depositing titanium nitride. Both the temperature used to deposit nitride coatings and the temperature needed to nitride aluminum, are too high for most aluminum alloys. I am currently working on both concepts, with substantially more success depositing nitride coatings than directly nitriding the aluminum.
