Altering the Surface Appearance of Galvanized Washers

I had an arbor/trellis built in my backyard. Among the hardware the contractor used were some large galvanized washers, which I am told are made from malleable iron and hot dipped galvanized.

Unfortunately, the bright silver finish stands out like a sore thumb against the rich, dark brown color of the hardwood. I'm trying to indentify alternative methods I can use to have the appearance of the washers blend with the wood. One option, I'd suppose, is painting them. If I go that route, what type of paint do I need to use? Do I need to do any special preparation to the washer to make the paint stick?

As another option, is there some type of chemical or solution I could apply that would change the color of the hot dipped galvanized surface without risking the integrity of the hardware or allowing rust formation? In terms of color, I'd be looking for either a dark brown or black matte finish. Any other suggestions? Keep in mind the structure is already built, so the washers cannot be dipped or dropped in a tank.
