Why has cadmium plating of fasteners been banned?

We are fastener sellers and many time enquiries are coming for cadmium plated fasteners. Can some body tell why many governments have put a ban to do cadmium plating?

To my knowledge cadmium plating has not been completely banned (still used in some military applications). However, due to the negative environmental aspects of cadmium plating, electroplated zinc has become the preferred substitution.

Dear Nadeem Saheb,

Because it is pollutant and damages our environment . Now many better alternatives to cadmium is available that we call znzin alloy plating. For your information cadmium is not banned but it is controlled , if you want to do cadmium plating you have to take special permission and assure authorities for 100% proper disposal of waste water as per local norms.

Cadmium plating is still specified by Government and Aircraft manufacturers. Platers still plate both Cadmium with additives, and without (for certain steel to avoid embrittlement.)

The Japanese plating suppliers have long had a leading role in developing Zinc Alloy plating. Two very popular baths are Zinc/Nickel and Tin/Zinc. The deposits from these baths, with the appropriate chromate conversion coating can withstand well over a thousand hours of Neutral Salt Fog testing.
