Does SS 304 stainless steel tank corrode under hot water (hard water)?

"Individual results may vary", but thousands of final hot water rinse tanks on plating lines are built of 304 SS.

yes, near welding seams because of chromium carbide formation during welding and following low chrome on grain boundary.you need higher chrome contained or heat treatment after welding. good luck

No corrosion on SS304. But you have to be careful about the welding part, where which welding material you have used for it. My suggestion is to use the welding rods of ss 316 or 310 quality for welding.

I have used 304 SS 10,000 gal tank at 204 degree F for 30 Years with only few problems at weld line.

After welding/assembling you have to pickle and passivate and if thats not enough you may consider electropolishing.

We heard that Merloni is does passivation on the insides of their SS tanks. Corrosion and failures of SS tanks are quite common in India, wherever soft water is in use.
