Letter 3053 Tarnish on silver plating of electronical components- Hello everybody : I want to ask if somebody knows about a tarnish cleaner on silver plating of electronical components whih I can recover a finish withaout tarnish . I know about some chemical procceses to recover the finishes of silver plating componentes but I ned some help about if there is an other spray product or procceses whith I can attempt to recover some electronical components with tarnish problems in its finishes. I hope sombody can help me Best Regards Eduardo Herrera Delgado
- Dear Eduardo, Are the components still in bulk, or are they attached to an assembly? Did they tarnish in a bag, or in service? Regards, tom
- As a side issue to this topic. Does anyone know what the electrical resistivity is of Silver Tarnish (Silver Sulfide)? We have silver plated over a nickel underplate all over a copper base metal and the silver does tarnish over time. These are electrical parts and the contact resistance can be a problem if it is too high. The ASTM spec (B700) just mentions that the resistance is high, but does not provide any more detail. As far as I know the only way to remove the tarnish is either with abrasive or chemically. And both will remove some amount of the silver. Thanks Peter Stern Mechanical Design Engineer
