How to turn sandblasted steel deep brown




I am looking for a chemical (acid) or solution that will turn sandblasted metal to a deep brown color, Like gun metal browning, It is for a metal stair and handrail in a residence.Can anyone offer a solution?

Electrophoretic coatings would be nice for a staircase, but you don't do just one, as the process is for long runs of the same color. You have to charge the tank with the chemicals and dye, so it is not economical to coat a short run.

Here is a photo of some of the colors of the coatings. I saw them at an American Electroplaters meeting in New Jersey.
