Rust colored stain vs rust on metal

++++

We sell a range of letterboxes constructed from Galvanized Steel. In some cases, customers wish to have the letterbox plastered (with an acrylic plaster, then painted to match their house. One letterbox planted near some trees/shrubs is showing rust colored staining on the top and two sides nearest the shrubbery, and virtually none on the other two sides. The customer is certain his letterbox is rusting, but I am sure it is a stain from the leaves. Is there a simple test I can perform on the letter-box to convince him that his letterbox is not rusting? To simply replace the letterbox would not solve this particular problem if the trees are at fault.
