Chroming of Auto-Wheels [Michigan]

I can't find the chrome wheels at the price that I want to pay, so I'm thinking of just getting my wheels chromed.

Mass production reduces costs so much that the bad news is that having your four wheels chromed may well cost as much as buying new chrome wheels. Are your present wheels just plain pressed steel and painted, or are they aluminum alloy wheels? Would polishing the aluminum instead of plating it be acceptable?
