Setting up an electroplating plant on trial basis

Q. We are an automotive parts manufacturing firm. We wanna set up a electroplating plant on trial basis on small scale to manufacture emblems & logos of vehicles & electroplate them with chromium at the same time. Help us in settling chrome plating plant on trial basis to make our business expand. I want to know the EXACT processes involved in electroplating of chromium on ABS PLASTICS & formulation of chemicals involved on each stage (i-e degreasing, etching, neutralizing, activation in silver bath, rinsing, electroless copper , electroplating). The part we are interested in chrome plating is 2 inches in width & 3 inches in length & 2 inches in height made of ABS PLASTICS.Sir, if there is a handbook you can advise me or if there is any link on internet from where I can have the knowledge & technical information on setting up a new electroplating plant on small scale please let me know. I'll be really thankful to u.

A. Hello, Nasir.

You will not find the depth of information that you need on the internet because there is no economic model to compensate someone for the years of effort it takes to present a complex subject like that in a comprehensive and organized fashion. You'll need books.

For the sequences and principles of electroplating onto ABS, I would recommend "Standards & Guidelines for Electroplated Plastic". It will give you detailed information on everything involved in plating on plastic.

For information on how to design an electroplating plant, I think Durney's Electroplating Engineering Handbook [on AbeBooks or eBay or Amazon] is probably the single best source.

The major plating chemical suppliers like Atotech, CST Surtec, and Macdermid can give you the process sheets for chemical control. You may wish to retain an experienced consultant for fastest progress. Good luck.
