How to Clean and Clearcoat Aluminum Diamond Plate

I am looking for a way to clearcoat aluminum diamund plate. It seams easy but the customer I am doing it for says I can not whip it with any kind of rage to clean because it will scratch the aluminum. So I need to know how to clean all the dirt and oils off with out scratching it. I also need to know what to use to get the clearcoat to stick to the aluminum. Any ideas would be helpful.
