Low voltage and gas pipes

I was having a discussion with my boss on grounding issues and was informed that per the NEC grounding to gas pipes was not allowed. The reason given was electrolysis and also that the gas company is running low voltage through the lines to help prevent corrosion. I understand the corrosion issue with dissimilar metals reacting to each other, but does the gas company run low voltages on the gas pipes?

I don't know the practices of gas companies, but whether it's deliberate (imposed voltage from electronic generators) or accidental (galvanic voltages from different materials) or halfway in between (voltages from protective anodes), they run low voltage electricity.
