Outdoor Woodburning Stove Tube Cleaning [Virginia]

I have an outdoor woodburning stove and the vent tubes are really fouled with a hard substance. It is very difficult to get a rod through the tubes. How might I return the tubes to near clog free condition so that I might get more effiency from the heating process?
