Clear coat for vintage office furniture

++

I have stripped the paint from a metal (steel) barrister bookcase and would like to apply a clear coat. In tests I found that shellac and polyurethane give it an ugly yellow tint, and spray-on acrylics seem to scratch too easily. Can anyone give me a suggestion for something else? I had read that clear shellac should not yellow, did I perhaps get hold of a bad batch?

Thanks! Shawn Miller
