Is it normal to plate platinum jewelry [England]

Is it normal to rhodium-plate platinum jewelry? My engagement ring and diamond-set wedding band were made to re-set some old stones. We chose to use platinum rather than white gold. It was only in passing that the jeweler who did the work mentioned that he would be sending the ring for re-rhodium-plating after a size adjustment. I've been wearing the rings for a few months now and I have no complaints, but I'm curious. Will a different colour show through if the rings are scratched or wear with age? I saw one of the rings in its half-made state and it looked 'silver' to me, but the ring that was re-sized looked yellow-ish around the cut before it was re-plated.
