Kitchen cupboard hardware 

I am painting my kitchen cupboards for an updated look. They have shiny brass plated handles on them. I was wondering if there was a process to remove the plating. Can they be painted? I would like them either black or antiqued brass. Do I need to buy new handles or is there a way to salvage the old ones?
