Clear finishes for wrought iron 

I'm looking for a do-it-yourself means of protecting wrought iron from rusting. After fabrication, I'd like to buff and coat or treat with a solution to protect from rusting. Years ago, I read in a book some recipes which they used many years ago. Any suggestions?
