Copper tarnish prevention 

We have a fireplace hearth and mantle which are both completely covered with sheet copper. When they are polished and all the tarnish removed, they are beautiful! Is there any treatment or coating a homeowner can apply which will prevent tarnish buildup? Also, how can I buff away the tiny scratches in the sheet copper?
