Need help for gas log fireplace

I recently moved into a 3 year old home that has a gas log fireplace. I've always had a real woodburning fireplace and I don't know about using gas logs. Do you open the flue just like with a wood burning fireplace when its in use? And do you close the flue in the summer? How about having the chimney cleaned? I'm new at using gas logs and need some advice.
