Training information for painters

-----

I and the mfg. eng. in a union shop where anyone regardless of skill, can bid and obtain a position as a painter. On top of that, there is only very limited training time available. And, we almost never disqualify and individual.

Therefore, does anyone know where I can obtain training information, or video that will provide a solid foundation for these new painters.

Also, a sales order went through requiring the equipment be painted with ral2011. As I understand, this is a European color system. My problem, is that my current paint suppliers are not aware of this color system, and the customer does not understand what my problem is with matching the color. Does anyone know where I can obtain this color series. I guess it's somewhat similar to the fed. color standards, or also the pantone matching system.

Kelly,

Developing the skills and knowledge to become a "qualified" painter these days is not an overnight task. Current paint systems combined with environmental and safety regulations have pretty much eliminated the "blow and go" type of painting. Most union painters go through an apprenticeship program that can last for several years.

My first suggestion, therefore, would be to hire an experienced union painter familiar with the type of systems you are using.

Second, I would suggest hiring a paint consultant or Certificated NACE coating inspector. They should have the ability to provide basic training plus they could then spend some time verifying that the workmanship meets quality standards. NACE International does have training tapes and some paint application programs available. Also you should contact SSPC (Steel Structures Painting Council) to see what they have available.

Jim Shofstall - NACE Inspector # 2489

The RAL colors in Europe are normed colors for industry mainly but also for design and general painting. You can go to a German web site and just type in what you are looking for. Most sites support the English language.
