Rust-proofing Steel
+
I regularly use 1/4 inch thick steel plate cut @ 20 inch diameter and have it galvanized to prevent steel from rusting as these are installed underground. Are there ways other than galvanizing to prevent rusting?
Thanks,

There are a multitude of ways to prevent rust besides galvanizing. There are other hot-dip processes, there is electroplating, there is powder coating, electrocoating, PVD, CVD, and more. You just have to know what your requirements are and take a look at different things to see if there is something better. The closest things I know to galvanizing would be zinc electroplating and Galfan. You can get more info on Galfan at www.galfan.org.

- But an unbiased comparison, uhh, no.It's one thing when a university develops a technology and quietly sells it off. No problem.
- But when a university stays central to its marketing, with a compelling vested interest towards exaggerating the advantages of the technology and understating its weaknesses, the credibility of the university nosedives to the credibility level of any other infomercial producer. It is a modern day abomination. You followin' me there, cameraman?

- It seems that Galfan is one useful modification of the galvanizing process, with probable corrosion resistance and other improvements over straight zinc.
