Powder Coating for non-metal
products
+
Dear finishing.com members,
We are engineers from a company that utilizes aluminium
products. We are using an ELECTROSTATIC POWDER COATING SYSTEM . We
would like to learn if we can use the same system for coating
non-metal products; like wood, ceramics and composite panels.
Sincerely yours;

Electrostatic powder coating is used to coat materials as diverse
as pottery and glass. It is already used to coat wood, or to be more
precise MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). However the powder coating
used to coat wood or other heat sensitive products is UV cured and
would require specialised equipment.
If you need any other info just let me know.
Hope this helps

Yes is is possible. There are several firms in the U.K. alone
doing this. You do not neet U.V. curing equipment. Ordinary
thermo-setting type powders can be applied to M.D.F.
However the board needs to be pre-heated first to help it acheive
an electrostatic charge. Also, it helps if the powder is low
temperature, i.e. flows at about 140 degrees centigrade.
The powder is then flowed in an oven. This is best achieved in an
infrared oven.
