How to get mirror surface finishing (Ry 0.4) on Stainless Steel rod, dia. 8 mm ?

October 16, 2009

Hello folks, I'm trying to source the correct metal finishing processes to achieve surface roughness (Ry) 0.4. I have tried and tested using centerless grinding and electro-polish, however the results only came back at 0.6 max.

Further information, my sample looks bright in appearance, while the customer's sample looks dim (black/greyish).

Any suggestion to help me to identify the correct processes will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a nice day.

What is the length of the rod? It might be possible they are using mass finishing equipment. A darker color would indicate working of the surface by ceramic or porcelain media in a wet process.
