Coating on Aluminum cylinder bore for low friction [Canada]

We want to reduce friction between cylinder bore and piston. In ordr to get this, some coating on inside of cylinder bore may work. The material of cylinder bore is Aluminum 710. Does some know some coating method on this? The working temperature is -40F to 500F.

Hi, Linda. That's a broad question and I expect there have been whole seminars and books written about choosing a coating for cylinder bores. But nickel silicon carbide is a pretty common one, so you might start by investigating that one. Good luck!

You might consider coating the piston rings rather than the cylinder, especially if it's in a block. A sputter-deposited coating would do the job, such as molybdenum disulfide or tungsten disulfide. Both can handle the temperature range and aren't adversely affected by hydrocarbons.
