Rubber to metal bonding with Viton B

January 21, 2009

I work in the custom rubber molding industry that manufactures seals for a varity of industries but mainly in the oilfield. I tend to have problems when trying to bond Viton B to a large metal surface by means of injection molding. I am using a chemlock recomended bonding agent for vitons but I am getting frustrated with the results. My surface prep consist of degrease, sand blast and then degrease on last time before applying the bonding agent to carburized steel.

I would look at contamination in the blast step or the final degrease has oil in it. Yes even vapor degrease has some oil. A caustic tank frequently has a thin oil film. Manual degrease with acetone or alcohol normally is not effective.

Wayne,

I am somewhat familiar with Chemlok adhesives - one of our sister plants makes it and we use many Chemloks in our own elastomer/metal bonding :)

Are you able to verify surface cleanliness prior to application? What is your application method and dry film thickness? Finally, which Chemlok system are you using?
