Nickel plating an Aluminum/Copper assembly

September 17, 2008

The local plating house says this isn't possible because of the acid baths to prepare the aluminum will attack the copper. I've seen assemblies that have been coated with what looks like a Sulfamate nickel coating so it must be possible. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi, Mel. The aluminum ought to be copper plated before assembly, but I would agree with you that it's probably not impossible (of course I haven't seen the parts).
